For the birds....

While we were having all the snow, we kept seeing our bird friends flutter in and out. The bird house (that they never use in the winter that I have noticed) was completely covered and it didn't have food anyway. The bird feeder was also covered (see at the left) and the seed was pretty mushy and moldy so that wasn't an option either (I didn't really want to tromp out in the 3 feet of snow and clean it). Our solution was a chain for the birds. We popped some popcorn and pulled out the Cheerios and began stringing. N really loved talking about the patterns he was stringing on each one (perfect for math skills). It turned out great - except after we put them out, the snow fell again and covered them up. Now that the snow has melted the birds are loving these.

That's a great idea! I was also seeing birds that never come near my little "dog yard". I tried throwing them bread but it was either covered by snow or scooped up by the crows. I'm going to try that from my little trees :) Thanks Cindy!

Hi Julia,
In the past we also used cranberries or grapes but we didn't have any since it had been so long since we had been to the grocery. They are beautiful draped along branches but we just put it over our birdfeeder to ensure the birds got it and not the squirrels.
